Look: a fire is burning along Miami's freeway

Heavy smoke and flames are licking the sides of a Miami highway, where wildfires have been burning for several days. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) says roads are closed and traffic has been diverted.

No casualties or injuries were reported as the fires raged across more than 150 hectares of land.

Wildfires in Florida are not uncommon, our weather team says, but they tend to be smaller and more localized than those in other parts of the US. BBC presenter Ben Rich says temperatures are currently well above average for this time of year in Florida, with dry conditions.

He adds that it is also quite airy, making conditions conducive to wildfires. Weather doesn't cause fires, but it can cause them to burn and spread.
