A lawyer for Donald Trump yelled at prosecutor witness Michael Cohen during cross-examination about a 2016 phone call at issue in the former president's criminal hush-money trial.
Defense attorney Todd Blanche demanded that Cohen tell him whether Cohen lied during direct examination when he said he called Trump on October 24, 2016 to reveal that he had gotten porn star Stormy Daniels to agree not to go public with her. claim to have had sex with Trump.
Blanche confronted Cohen about text messages from that same day suggesting that he called then-Trump Organization security chief Keith Schiller that evening over concerns about the harassing text messages Cohen received when Trump was running for office that year presidency.
“I believe I also spoke with Mr. Trump about the Stormy Daniels case,” Cohen told Blanche in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Blanche then said, “We don't ask what you believe.”
“The jury doesn't want to hear what you think!” said Blanche.
Blanche's dramatic display of emotion came after hours of much low-key and sometimes confusing cross-examination for Cohen, who served as Trump's personal lawyer and fixer for years.
Cohen has admitted that he paid Daniels $130,000 before the November 2016 election to keep her quiet about an alleged tryst with Trump a decade earlier, to prevent the story from damaging Trump's chances in the election.
He says he did so at the direction of Trump, who is accused in the case of falsifying company records related to his and his company's reimbursement to Cohen for Daniels' payout.
Cohen is expected to be the final witness for prosecutors in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
It is not clear whether Trump's lawyers will call witnesses themselves.
Regardless, jurors could begin deliberations in the case next week.
Trump, who denies having sex with Daniels, is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
