New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a bill aimed at helping people recovering from miscarriage or stillbirth, her office announced Wednesday.
The legislation, known as Ava's Law, directs the Department of Health to provide the public with information about the resources available to individuals who have suffered a pregnancy loss or child loss. The information will be made available statewide through the DOH Maternal Health website.
Healthcare providers who provide direct medical care to individuals and their partners experiencing pregnancy loss or infant loss will offer a print or digital version of the pamphlet as additional information.
“Far too many parents are forced to deal with the pain and trauma of losing a child through miscarriage or stillbirth,” Hochul said in a statement. “When the worst happens, it is imperative that we support the mental and physical health of women coping with this loss. With Ava’s Law, we can ensure families have access to the support and resources they need during their recovery.”
“I am proud of Ava's Law, which is a testament to our recognition of the profound impact pregnancy and child loss have on countless families. By introducing this legislation, we aim to close the information gap by mandating the creation of informational pamphlets in collaboration with reputable organizations,” said Senator Nathalia Fernandez. “Ava's law underscores our commitment to accessible resources, ensuring affected individuals can access essential services such as mental health care, milk banks, gynecological support and postpartum doula services. By making these resources available statewide, we are strengthening New York's commitment to reproductive care and empowering healthcare providers to guide healing and support. It is one of the greatest honors of my career to pass Ava's Law, a compassionate and essential piece of legislation that gives those enduring pregnancy and child loss the knowledge and resources they need during this difficult time.”
