A Democratic congressman who spent millions of his own money on a failed Senate bid is being derided as a “loser” and “pathetic” after being defeated by his closest rival.

Rep. David Trone, D-Md., a wealthy co-founder of Total Wine & More, lost Tuesday's Prince George's County Democratic Senate primary to Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks by a double-digit margin, despite spending approximately $60 million and possessing a significant electoral advantage early in the race.

“Total Wine and More founder David Trone just spent about 5,922,000 bottles on Josh to lose a not particularly close Senate primary,” one critic joked in a post on X, referring to a wine brand .

DEM NEWCOMER AIM FOR HISTORY WITH PRIMARY WIN OVER GREAT CONTROVERSIAL CONGRESSMAN

“David Trone spent $60 million on a Democratic primary, he won't come close to winning and Maryland has a population of 6.1 million which means he could have given every person in MD $9.83 with the money that he wasted,” says digital strategist Greg Price. wrote.

One critic posted a meme joking about what Trone would look like if he realized the “mistake” he had made, and another critic referenced one of Trone's previously reported controversies in which he allegedly threatened to punch a delivery man in a Total Wine store to kill.

“David Trone spent $62 million to lose a primary[.] I wonder how many staffers he's threatening to 'execute' today[.] My DMs are open if David Trone threatens to 'disappear' you,” the critic wrote.

“Imagine you're a billionaire selling *booze* and you can't get people to like you. Lmao Trone must be the biggest loser in history,” another critic joked, while another wrote, “Over 60 million dollars gone down the drain. David Trone. Quite sad and pathetic to be honest.”

Trone was no stranger to controversy, both inside and outside the campaign, and was regularly caught making wild statements.

He once used a disparaging term for black people when he spoke at a House Budget Committee hearing on tax policy in March with Shalanda Young, the director of the Office of Budget and Management, who was testifying before the committee.

“So this Republican jigaboo that – it's the tax rate that's holding back business investment, it's just completely flawed for people who have never run a business,” he said. 'They've never been there before. They have no idea what they're talking about.'

Trone tried to clean up after using the word, telling Fox News Digital that he made a mistake while trying to use a different word.

On a more recent occasion, he yelled at a reporter who pressed him over a controversial comment he made about police on social media.

The tense exchange took place during a campaign stop in Rockville, Maryland, where Trone expressed anger over the previous day's reporting of his claim that an “increased police presence” does not make people feel safe.

“You should be ashamed of the journalism you did yesterday,” Trone said as he approached the reporter who had just asked him about his widely panned X-post focused on crime and police. In the post, Trone claimed that the American justice system is “systematically racist” and that an “increased police presence” does not “make everyone feel safer.”

'I should be ashamed? I'm not ashamed, Congressman,” the reporter replied before Trone accused him of riffing on rules.

“You took one line out of twenty, and you should be ashamed of that kind of journalism… You make shillings for Larry Hogan, so keep shilling for Larry Hogan,” Trone scolded the reporter, accusing him of advocating for the former Republican Maryland. Gov. Hogan, the GOP candidate for Senate.
