Several crew members were recently injured in a crash on the Georgia set of an Amazon MGM Studios film starring Eddie Murphy Associated press reported on Tuesday.
The studio said the accident happened Saturday while shooting a sequence that “did not go as planned.” Two of the injured crew members were hospitalized after the incident, a person close to the production told the news station.
“We are still gathering facts about what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering,” a spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement to the AP on Tuesday.
“The well-being of the entire crew and cast is our number one priority, and we will continue to adhere to the highest industry safety standards throughout filming. All safety measures were assessed and checked prior to the shoot,” the spokesperson said.
The incident occurred when a truck “locked up” and collided with a car behind the scenes of “The Pickup,” which was filming on location outside Atlanta. The injuries reportedly included bumps, bruises and broken bones. All employees are expected to make a full recovery.
The person who spoke to AP described the event as a “completely freak accident” and noted that there were no “complicated or dangerous” stunts involved. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the union representing Hollywood crew members, is investigating the incident.
Directed by Tim Story, “The Pickup” launched production in the Atlanta area in February. None of the film's stars, including Murphy, Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson, were on set when the collision occurred, the AP reported.
The industry has been plagued in recent years by a spate of serious injuries on film sets, including the death of camera assistant Sarah Jones on a railroad trestle in Georgia in 2014 during the filming of the movie “Midnight Rider.”
