LONDON – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday called for a general election on July 4, after economic data earlier in the day showed a decline in inflation near the British central bank's 2% target.
“Earlier today I spoke to His Majesty the King to request the dissolution of Parliament. The King has granted this request and a general election will take place on July 4.” Sunak said at a press conference outside Downing Street.
Data from the Office for National Statistics showed that UK inflation in April fell to 2.3% earlier on Wednesday morning.
Sunak's ruling Conservative Party had hoped for signs of an improving economic climate as it lags behind in the polls prior to the national elections.
“Economic stability is the foundation of any future success,” Sunak said. “And thanks to our collective sacrifice and your hard work, we have achieved two important milestones in achieving that stability.”
He noted that the British economy is now growing faster than anyone expected.
