US airlines said Friday from Boeing Delays in the delivery of the 787 Dreamliner have forced the company to cancel a number of long-haul flights in the second half of the year and early 2025. The latest airline to change its flight schedule, citing manufacturer production issues.
American expects to receive three Dreamliners this year, instead of six submit on Thursday. Boeing said earlier this week that parts shortages will prevent the company from ramping up production of widebody planes.
“We are making these adjustments now to ensure we can reaccommodate customers on affected flights,” American said in a statement. “We will proactively contact affected customers to offer alternative travel arrangements. We remain committed to our customers and team members and limiting the impact of these delays while continuing to provide an extensive global network.”
American will suspend some routes to Europe at the end of the summer. This is what changes:
- Flights from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Athens will be suspended on September 3. The seasonal route was previously scheduled to end on October 26.
- Flights from New York to Barcelona will be suspended on September 3. The route was previously valid all year round and will resume next year.
- Flights from Dallas/Fort Worth International to Dublin and Rome, both of which were scheduled as year-round flights, will now be suspended on October 26.
- Flights from Chicago O'Hare to Paris end on September 3 and will resume next year.
American will also offer only one daily flight between New York and Rome starting August 5, down from twice daily, and service between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Kona, Hawaii, will not operate this winter.
American said it will continue to offer 55 international long-haul routes this winter and will add daily nonstop service between Philadelphia and Barcelona starting in January, as well as seasonal service between Miami and Montevideo, Uruguay. Flights between Miami and Sao Paulo, Brazil, will also be added three times a week.
The airline is further evaluating its flight schedule due to the Boeing 737 Max delays.
Boeing did not immediately comment.
