Where to watch Austria vs. Watch France: Euro 2024 live stream online, TV channel, prediction, start time, odds

France entered UEFA Euro 2024 as favorites for the title and Didier Deschamps' men open their tournament against Austria on Monday. Les Bleus fell short in 2020 after reaching the final on home soil in 2016 and now the French will go again with superstar Kylian Mbappe now leading the way as captain. However, Ralf Rangnick and his Austrian side are standing in the way and this opening meeting in Dusseldorf could set the tone how difficult Group D could actually be for France.

So far, Deschamps has not suffered injuries as serious as any of his opponents. Rangnick has been deprived of David Alaba, while Poland will now be without Robert Lewandowski for at least one or two games and both Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners are the latest absentees for the Netherlands. Admittedly, Les Bleus are the only country in world football that you would expect to be able to handle an injury crisis reasonably well.

With the big match against the Dutch in Leipzig taking place in the second match before facing the Polish Eagles in Dortmund to close Group D, the French cannot afford to make a mistake here. Austria has the potential to be tough customers, but pre-tournament is expected to fall with Poland for third place. If they can get off to a solid start and perhaps avoid defeat, the pressure could be on whoever comes out worse in the second game.

Here are our storylines, how to watch the match and more:

Group D

One of the most attractive groups of this European Championship consists of two superpowers of European football in France and the Netherlands. Two of the world's biggest talent producers have been battling it out for top five status in the UEFA coefficient in recent years, with Ligue 1 pushing itself out of the Eredivisie last season. However, the French and Dutch face two tough sides: Ralf Rangnick's Austria and Poland with some quality pieces despite their general inability to translate that performance on paper into results on the pitch. Almost everyone will expect Les Bleus and Oranje to advance as the top two here, but which potential order is yet to be determined and both will know they cannot afford to slip against the Austrians or the Poles before they face each other in the second. round of games.

Team news

Austria: With the exception of Germany-based duo Stefan Lainer – who is missing despite his 39 caps – and Xaver Schlager at 43, Rangnick has provided few surprises in his tournament selection. David Alaba is a huge miss, but the Real Madrid man remains far from fully fit, so that was expected. Furthermore, seven team members practice their profession in Austria in their own country and experienced key figures Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer are present with the man-skipper of Borussia Dortmund.

Possible Austria XI: Lindner; Lienhart, Daniliuc, Trauner, Mwene; Seiwald, Laimer; Baumgartner, Kainz, Schmidt; Gregoritsch.

France: With just one enforced injury-related absence in Lucas Hernandez, Deschamps has had a virtually unhindered selection process, which saw N'Golo Kante make a surprise return. This is the final call-up for Olivier Giroud who will retire after the tournament, while Antoine Greizmann is the second most experienced player in this group. Mbappe is now captain and will return to the starting line-up after resting most of the game in Canada, but his rust could be a concern for Deschamps. This is Mike Maignan's first tournament as the undisputed number 1, while William Saliba will be hoping to start the tournament and become a regular for Les Bleus.

Possible France XI: Maignan; Kounde, Upamecano, Saliba, Hernandez; Camavinga, Rabiot; Dembélé, Griezmann, Mbappé; Giroud.

Prediction

While a narrow one-goal win wouldn't be surprising, France should have too much for Austria and are likely to get the job done quite comfortably. Expect Mbappe to hit the ground running with a goal or two as the French start as they plan to continue. Choose: Austria 0, France 2.
