Trump to Christian interest group: 'You're going to make a comeback' if I win

Former President Trump on Monday virtually addressed a conservative Christian advocacy group that supports the end of abortion, telling the organization's members that if he is re-elected they would “make a comeback like virtually no other group.”

Trump delivered a roughly two-minute video message at the Danbury Institute's Life and Liberty Forum, featuring remarks from evangelists and Christian leaders. He made no mention of abortion in his remarks to the group, although he vowed to defend “innocent life” if re-elected.

“These are difficult times for our nation, and your work is so important. We cannot afford for anyone to sit on the sidelines,” said Trump, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for November's presidential election. “Now is the time for all of us to work together and stand up for our values and for our freedoms. And you just can't vote Democrat.”

Trump claimed that Democrats are “against religion,” even though President Biden often speaks about his Catholic faith.

“We must defend religious freedom, freedom of speech, innocent life, and the heritage and tradition that have made America the greatest nation in the history of the world. But now, as you know, we are a nation in decline,” Trump told the newspaper. group.

“I know that each of you protects these values every day, and I hope that we will defend them side by side over the next four years,” he continued. “These will be your years, because you will make a comeback like almost no other group.”

Trump's virtual appearance at the Danbury Institute made headlines given the group's tough approach on certain issues.

The group describes itself as “committed to truth and virtue in a world that validates absurdity as normal and ridicules what was taken for granted a decade ago.” The website compares abortion to “the sacrifice of children on the altar of self” and claims that marriage “is a unique bond between one man and one woman for life, and sexual intimacy should only be expressed within this marital relationship. “

During his campaign, Trump repeatedly took credit for ending Roe v. Wade through his appointment of three conservative Supreme Court justices. But he has also declined to take a position on a federal limit on abortion, saying instead that it should be left to individual states to decide through legislation or referendum how to handle the procedure.

Trump has also argued that Republicans should consider the political ramifications of their messaging on abortion.

“You have to follow your heart on this issue, but don't forget that you also have to win elections to restore our culture and in fact take back our country, which is very unfortunately a nation in decline right now,” Trump said in a video statement from April. abortion. “Our nation needs help. Unity is needed, we all need to work closely together.”

Democrats have repeatedly linked Trump to the restrictive abortion policies implemented in Texas, Florida and other conservative states, highlighting stories of women who have been unable to get quality health care as a result.

The Biden campaign has sought to draw a stark contrast between Trump's record on abortion and that of the Biden White House, which has taken steps to increase access to the procedure and abortion drugs after the end of Roe to protect.

“If you want to know who Trump will fight for in a second term, just look at who he spends his time speaking to: anti-abortion extremists who call abortion 'child sacrifice' and want to 'completely eradicate abortion,'” Biden said . Campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said this on Monday in response to Trump's comments.

“A second Trump term will certainly lead to more extreme abortion bans without exceptions, women being punished for seeking the care they need, and doctors being criminalized for providing care,” Chitika added. “Women can and will stop him by re-electing President Biden and Vice President Harris in November.”
