The US announces new sanctions against Nicaragua due to migration, human rights violations and ties with Russia

The Biden administration announced new sanctions and other restrictions in Nicaragua on Wednesday, aiming to curb migration to the US southern border and punish the country for alleged human rights abuses and its close ties with Russia.

Some of the actions against the country are being taken to address “significant concerns about the government of Nicaragua and its continued oppression of the people of Nicaragua and their exploitation of migrants,” a senior government official told reporters this morning.

U.S. officials accused the leaders of Nicaragua's government — the husband-and-wife duo of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo — of “taking advantage of desperate and vulnerable migrants.”

“The [Nicaraguan] The regime sells visas on arrival at their airports for migrants, requiring them to leave the country within 96 hours,” a US official explained. “So they benefit significantly from facilitating illegal migrants who eventually, in many cases, find their way up there. toward our southwestern border.”

Because air travel is often involved, the Biden administration today also issued an aviation alert to airlines and charter flight companies, intended to alert airlines that migrants are being exploited through the use of their planes. The US recommends that these companies participate in travel document validation processes, work with the Biden administration to identify routes known for migrant smuggling and report concerns about Nicaraguan government actions at the airports.

Wednesday's sanctions are both logistical and political: Russia is also involved in the administration's actions. The Russian Ministry of Interior Training Center in Managua is among the Nicaragua-based organizations that have been sanctioned because, according to U.S. officials, the Russian military training center trains the Nicaraguan National Police “to prosecute political opposition.”

“Daniel Ortega and Rosario – and those under their command – continue to unjustly detain their own countrymen as they courageously advocate for a free civil society, religious freedom and freedom of expression,” a US official explained. “They have chosen to join Russia's authoritarian government and follow its rule of repression.”

Finally, the U.S. hopes to target Nicaragua's financial elites by imposing sanctions on two government-run gold companies and imposing visa restrictions on 250 government and civil society leaders that hinder the rights and freedoms of the Nicaraguan people, the U.S. said officials.
