Support for access to abortions for all reasons increases: Survey

Americans increasingly say they support abortion access “for any reason,” according to a poll released Tuesday from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

A solid majority of respondents — 61 percent — in the June survey say their state should allow someone to have a legal abortion if “the person does not want to become pregnant for whatever reason.”

That's a 12 percentage point increase from the 49 percent who held that view in a June 2021 survey, which was conducted a year before the Supreme Court struck down federal abortion rights in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

Support for the right to abortion “for any reason” has also risen, compared with the 54 percent who said so in June last year.

The growing support for these issues extends across the political spectrum and the gender divide.

Since 2021, support for this position has increased 11 percentage points among Republicans, from 27 percent to 38 percent; 14 percentage points among Democrats, from 69 percent to 83 percent; and 11 percentage points among independents, from 46 percent to 57 percent.

Among men, support rose from 51 percent to 59 percent and among women from 46 percent to 63 percent.

In total, 70 percent believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases, up from 64 percent a year ago.

Access to abortion has become an increasingly prominent issue in American politics. Since the Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 decision, full abortion bans with limited exceptions have gone into effect in 14 Republican-controlled states, and three other states have restricted abortions after about six weeks.

Former President Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, has approached the issue of abortion access, widely seen as the Republican Party’s least popular issue, carefully. Trump has touted his role in appointing Supreme Court justices who secured the majority that overturned Roe v. Wade and has embraced the position that states should be allowed to set their own abortion laws.

President Biden and Democrats in Congress have supported legislation that would enshrine Roe's protections at the federal level.

The poll of 1,088 adults was conducted June 20-24. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is 4 percentage points.
