Cox, 77, made the surprising comments during one of the latest episodes of Rich Leigh's business podcast “The Starting Line.”

While the Succession And Brave heart star called the Bible “one of the worst books ever,” he also argued that religion has held humanity back because religions are “belief systems external to ourselves.”

“Oh significantly, yes,” Cox responded during the recent podcast interview. “I think religion holds us back because they are belief systems that are outside of ourselves.”

“They don't have to do with who we are, we deal with, Oh, if God says this and God does that,” he continued. “We created that idea of God, and we created it as a control issue, and it is also a patriarchal issue.”

Cox then turned to the Bible, arguing that the Bible was “one of the worst books ever” because of its propaganda and representation of patriarchal stories and values.

“They need it, but they don't need to hear lies, they need some kind of truth, and that's not the truth,” Cox continued during the fiery interview. “It's not the truth, it's a mythology, you know… it doesn't really have to do with what women understand better than anyone else.”

Meanwhile, the Troy actor also discussed the escalating war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Middle East.

“You know they will fix it, but it will never go away because of belief systems – belief systems that do not serve equanimity,” he said this weekend.

“It's all about this idea of God, that the idea that there's a God who takes care of all of us – there's no such thing, it doesn't happen, that's not the point,” Cox continued.

“Cox is addicted to the sound of his own voice,” one X user tweeted shortly after the interview aired this weekend.

“The only positive thing you can say about the Bible is that some self-righteous old fart can call it the worst book ever written and none of his followers will hunt him down and behead him for saying so,” someone else responded. “I would like to hear his opinion on other religious books.”
