Rep. Jim McGovern slams Mike Johnson for 'acting as a supporter for Donald Trump'

Congressman Jim McGovern condemned House Speaker Mike Johnson for speaking out in support of Donald Trump outside the former president's hush money trial in New York.

Congressman Jim McGovern condemned the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson for expressing his support for Donald Trump outside the former president's hush money trial in New York, RadarOnline.com has learned.

McGovern entered the House floor during a hearing Wednesday to argue against several proposed police bills and launch a scathing rebuke of Trump and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

McGovern's statements about Johnson and Trump begin around the 31:00 mark

After expressing doubt that the bills would have any impact, the Democratic lawmaker from Massachusetts said, “Just a free piece of advice to my Republican friends: It's probably not the best idea to take the lead on law and order over to take from someone who, like us Speak, is a defendant for covering up hush money payments to a porn star for political gain.”

“That's not to mention the other three criminal charges he faces,” McGovern continued. He then held up that morning's print edition The New York Times and pointed to the front page with a photo of Johnson, one of the last group of Trump allies to appear in the Manhattan courthouse and denounce the criminal trial.

During a hearing in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, McGovern held up the New York Times cover story showing Johnson at the New York courthouse.

The Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives told reporters On Tuesday, he said Trump was “a friend” and that he wanted to “be there to support him,” before calling the case a “sham trial.”

“They are doing this on purpose to keep him here and keep him off the campaign trail,” Johnson added.

McGovern characterized the comments as “unbelievable” and pointedly scolded Johnson, saying, “Here is a photo of the Speaker of this House of Representatives, second in line after the presidency, standing in front of a courthouse and supporting Donald Trump functions. trying to interfere with a criminal trial because the Republicans apparently love law and order, unless it applies to them.”

Speaking to reporters outside the Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday, Johnson called the hush money case against Trump a “sham.”

“Unbelievable,” he repeated, and went on to say that “this stunt undermines this House of Representatives,” adding that Trump “has been indicted more times than he has been elected.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives then asked McGovern to “refrain from personalizing toward presumptive nominees for the office of President.”

“I didn't think so,” he responded before continuing his rebuke, declaring that Republican credibility has “evaporated.”

“Do they have the nerve to tell us about the criminal justice system? Give me a break!” McGovern said before declaring, “It's pathetic!”

While speaking at the courthouse the previous day, Johnson also addressed star witness Michael CohenTrump's former personal lawyer and 'fixer', who testified against his ex-boss on Monday and Tuesday.

“This is a man who is clearly on a mission for personal revenge,” the Speaker said. “He is someone with a history of perjury. No one should believe a word he says in it.”

Trump said he thinks Noem is “great” and “she has been a supporter of his since day one.”

It has become routine for Trump allies to speak out on behalf of the ex-president ahead of the proceedings and make statements that Trump himself would not be allowed to make under a court-implemented procedure. gag order.

The former president is prohibited from making public statements about anyone involved in the case or family members of the court. He was cited earlier this month for violating the order on nine separate occasions, and judge Juan Merchan ordered him to pay $1,000 per violation.

Since then, Trump is suspected of calling on some of his leading supporters to express their concerns about the case on his behalf. Before Tuesday's hearing, he seemed to suggest that was his intention.

“I have a lot of surrogates,” he said outside the courthouse, “and they speak very nicely.”
