Pence calls changes to RNC platform on abortion 'deep disappointment'

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday rebuked Republican Party leaders for approving a 2024 platform that significantly changed attitudes toward abortion, calling on delegates to restore the previous wording at next week's party national convention.

“The RNC platform is a deep disappointment to the millions of pro-life Republicans who have always expected the Republican Party to stand up for life,” Pence said in a statement through Advancing American Freedom, his advocacy group.

“This is not the time to give ground in the fight for the right to life,” he continued. “The 2024 platform has erased historic pro-life principles that have long been the foundation of the platform. I urge delegates attending the Republican National Convention next week to restore the language of our party platform that recognizes the sanctity of human life and affirms that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life that cannot be violated.”

The Republican Platform Committee overwhelmingly approved the new platform on Monday. The platform reflects former President Trump’s positions on key issues including trade, immigration and foreign policy, while removing specific language on traditional marriage and establishing federal restrictions on abortion.

“We proudly stand for families and life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees that no person shall be deprived of life or liberty without due process of law and that states are therefore free to pass laws protecting these rights,” the platform on abortion reads.

Trump has faced relentless political attacks from Democrats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Trump appointed three of the justices whose votes overturned the landmark ruling that protected abortion access.

The former president has said states should be allowed to pass individual abortion laws through legislatures or referendums, calling it a “beautiful thing to see” as some states enshrine abortion rights and others pass restrictive bans with no exceptions.

He also argues that Republicans must weigh the political consequences of their approach to abortion.

Pence was fiercely loyal to Trump during his four years as vice president, but has since repeatedly broken with his old boss on policy issues including abortion, welfare reform and aid to Ukraine.

The former vice president, who also ran an unsuccessful campaign in 2024, described the shift in the Republican Party platform on abortion as “part of a broader retreat within our party, where we are trying to be vague for political expediency.”

“The GOP platform may retreat, but we in the pro-life movement never will,” Pence said. “We will continue to be a people of life, and we will not rest or relent until the sanctity of life is once again centered in American law in every state across our country.”
