New York's bill would expand coverage for breast cancer screenings

Two New York state lawmakers announced legislation Thursday that would expand coverage for breast cancer screenings and strengthen early detection of women at higher risk.

A bill from Democratic Senator John Mannion and Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright would expand insurance coverage for women in New York to people with second-degree relatives, such as grandmothers, granddaughters, aunts or cousins, who have had breast cancer.

Current state law from 1989 includes age and other limits, and mammography insurance only covers the history of first-degree relatives.

“Early detection is the key to beating breast cancer and we know that unfortunately this is a disease that runs in families,” Mannion said. “This bill updates laws passed more than thirty years ago to reflect modern science and our current understanding of breast cancer. treatment of breast cancer. All women, especially high-risk women, should have insurance coverage for these essential and potentially life-saving screenings.”

“I am proud to be a lead sponsor in the Assembly on legislation to expand breast cancer screening eligibility to more New Yorkers with a family history of breast cancer,” Seawright said. “This year, more than 15,000 women across New York will be diagnosed with this devastating disease. . It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Early detection is crucial. This bill will improve access to screenings, early diagnosis and treatment to save lives.”
