In short: George Washington University lobbied on campus under protest pressure

Higher education

Amid scrutiny over her handling of pro-Palestinian protests on campus earlier this month, George Washington University rented Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman to work on 'higher education issues'. According to authorities, work started on May 6 new registrationtwo days before police cleared the encampment and the House Oversight Committee canceled its hearing on the demonstrations with D.C.'s police chief and mayor.

Lobbyists on this account include former Reps. Greg Laughlin (R-Texas) and Lacy Clay (D-Mo.), as well as Yvette Cravins, a former House Oversight Committee staffer and attorney. According to the university, this is also the first time that the university has engaged outside lobbyists since 2009 Lobby Disclosure Act Database.

healthcare

Ozempic creator Novo Nordisk rented Arnold & Porter to lobby on issues related to “production capacity and supply chain resilience.” There is currently limited availability of certain injections for the weight-loss drug Wegovy, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)although availability has recovered following shortages of both Ozempic and Wegovy last summer.

The Danish drugmaker has increased its federal lobbying spending as it pushes Congress to pass a bill that would lift restrictions on Medicare coverage of weight management treatments: the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act. One of the lobbyists on the bill is Eugenia Edwards Pierson, a former clerk of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where the House version of the bill has been since its introduction last summer.

Stream

Streaming giant Fubo has rented TeleMedia Policy Corp., the first external lobbyist, working on competition and communications issues affecting distribution. Fubo is part of the Preserve Viewer Choice Coalition, which has pushed back on efforts to apply broadcast regulations to streaming platforms.

The lobbyist for the account is Justin Lilley, a former staffer and adviser to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is responsible for setting communications and technology policy.

TikTok

The TikTok Coalitionwhich describes the popular video-sharing application as a 'threat to national security' website, rented Iggy Ventures to lobby for the so-called 'TikTok bill' in early April. The lobbyist on the bill is Rick Lane, a 21st Century Fox and Chamber of Commerce alum.

Biden signed the bill late last month, which would force Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest from TikTok or risk a U.S. ban, as part of a broader foreign aid package. TikTok filed a lawsuit earlier this month to block the law, arguing the 270-day timeline was unrealistic and calling the bill “an extraordinary and unconstitutional declaration of power.”
