⚽ Good morning everyone, but especially to …

USMNT SUPPORTERS

Gregg Berhalter is off as the American Men's National Team coach after a disappointing performance at the Copa America and two years before the United States becomes co-host of the 2026 World Cup.

I hate to celebrate a firing — these are real people with real human emotions, after all — but I believe it was the right move, and most fellow USMNT fans seem to agree. The United States has more talent than ever, but has rarely produced the results to match. During Berhalter's two-part tenure dating back to late 2018 (full timeline here), the Stars and Stripes managed just five wins over top-20 opponents, four of which came against Mexico.

The Copa America failure – the first time the US national team failed to advance from a competition it organized itself And the first time a host failed to make it out of the group stage of the tournament — sealed its fate. Berhalter took the blame in a statement after his dismissal.

He hardly deserves all the blame Tim Weah's dumb red card was a disaster — but the U.S. national team had been at a standstill since the 2022 World Cup, and this was the right choicewrites Pardeep Cattry.

  • Cat food: “The last 10 months of work have effectively undone the undeniable strides the team made during his first three years in the job. The head coach's second stint, which began last September after his initial contract expired at the end of 2022, showed the stark difference between starting from scratch and reaching the next level. There was little Berhalter could do to get his team to the next gear, and long before their Copa America failure, the cracks were starting to show.”

The U.S. national team has two years to get the ship back on course. And they can (and should) do it.

  • Christian Pulisic has just completed its best season in one of the best leagues in the world.
  • The same applies to Weston McKennie. A midfield including McKennie, the super-talented Gio Reyna and workhorses Tyler Adams And Yunus Moesah is tempting.
  • Folarin Balogun is the most promising young forward the USMNT has had in recent history.
  • There are questions about the defense, but a steadfast left back Antonee Robinson isn't there one of them.

Just now How Whether those pieces were any good is a matter of debate, but under Berhalter this 'golden generation' all too often produced dull results, and every step forward was accompanied by two steps back.

Now the same group that rehired Berhalter a year ago has a monumental lawsuit on its hands. Big, big names have been mentioned and they are all included in our long list of potential Berhalter replacements.

DARWIN NUÑEZ AND URUGUAY

Losing is never good, but losing and stepping into the crowd, Malice-at-the-Palace style, is about as disgusting as it gets. After losing to 10 men Colombia1-0, in the semi-final of the Copa America, Uruguay players, including Liverpool star Darwin Nuñez (seen at the bottom center of the photo) went into the stands and fought with fanswhich was a shocking, ugly icing on the cake of a disappointing evening in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Fans of both teams were ready for it – Uruguay's Jose Gimenez says the players' “families are in danger” and that there were no police officers to fend off the rowdy Colombia fans — when Nuñez and other players were hit by drink. The video speaks for itself actually.

The game itself was pretty wild too. Jefferson Lerma scored a header shortly before Daniel Muñoz was sent off for elbowing an opponent. Despite having an extra man, Uruguay could not find the equalizer.

Colombia will be faced with Argentina in the final in Miami on Sunday night. Uruguay will face Canada in the third place match in Charlotte Saturday night.

👎 Not so honorable mentions

  • Kawhi Leonard withdrawn by Team USA and was replaced by Derrick Wit.
  • Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to wire fraud after his gambling scandal and lifetime ban from the NBA.
  • The Avoiders degraded the struggling Bobby Miller.

🏀 Team USA Defeats Canada in Pre-Olympic Showcase

After a slow start, Team USA passed a talented team Canada team, 86-72, in his first pre-Olympic showcase game.

Anthony Edwards made headlines when he said he is the number 1 option in a team full of them, but he looked the part. The Timber wolves star was key in turning the game around for the US, finishing with a team-high 13 points, providing a boost to an otherwise sleepy start. Anthony Davis added 10 points and 11 rebounds and four blocks for good measure. When you can get those two off the bench, you know you're absolutely in good shape.

Sam Quinn says Edwards will play a crucial role in Paris.

  • Quinn: Jrue vacation started alongside Booker in this game, and his role-player skills would make more sense alongside those MVPs. But every time Kerr tries to turn Edwards into a role player, he creates an even more dangerous star. Even if Holiday makes more sense stylistically in the starting five, Edwards might just be too talented to ignore.”

⚽ England to Euro 2024 final after another late goal

If it hadn't been for a late goal almost two weeks ago, England would have been out of the European Championship much earlier than expected and faced with huge, varied questions. Now, thanks to another late goal, they go further than ever before. The Three Lions are in their first international final away from home after a 2-1 win over the The Netherlands. Replacement Ollie Watkins scored the winning goal in the 91st minute.

  • Xavi Simons — A star of the tournament — opened the scoring with a cracker in the seventh minute.
  • But England responded in controversial fashion shortly afterwards. Harry Kane missed a chance from close range but was contacted late by Denzel Dumfries. After a video review, England were awarded a penalty and Kane made no mistake. However, James Benge says England's all-time leading scorer should be removed from the line-up in the final.
  • Both teams created big chances, but it was the English substitutes who took advantage. Cole Palmer slid through Watkins, and the Aston Villa The man turned expertly and shot from a sharp angle to the other corner, which by all accounts produced a beautiful result.

England will face Spain on the last Sunday afternoon.

⚾ MLB Trade Deadline: Who's Buying and Who's Selling?

Getty Images

As the MLB trade deadline approaches at the end of the month, there are clear buyers and sellers emerging. But a lot can change in the meantime.

So Matt Snyder went through all 30 teams, by dividing them into six categories:

  • Obvious sellers
  • Obvious buyers
  • Trending towards sellers
  • Trending towards buyers
  • It can really go both ways
  • Delay?

That penultimate category has only one team.

  • Cutter:Mets – With a new front office boss in David Stearns in addition to possible rental players such as Pete Alonso, Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, JD Martinez, Harrison Bader And Adam Ottavino — not to mention players under control until 2025, such as Starling Marte — The Mets entered the season as the biggest sellers around. … They could completely take over the seller's market if they lose enough to drop out of the race. They could also get hot again and decide to spend a ton of money buying other teams' tradable contracts.”

This is an excellent preview of what is to come.

As a kid, I loved summer camps. And as an adult, I love what the WNBA does with summer camps. On “camp day” Wednesday, the WNBA spreads out five games throughout the day to give campers a chance to attend, and what a day it was. Jack Maloney has complete takeaway mealsand highlights included…

  • A'ja Wilson scored 24 points and 20 rebounds.
  • Caitlin Clark filled in the statistics sheet historical fashion while Angel Reese kept her record-breaking double-double streak alive. Although their rivalry dates back to college, Reese excited to collaborate at the All-Star Game.

Those last two points fit Jacks perfectly midseason award picks. Wilson is the runaway MVP favorite while Clark and Reese battle for Rookie of the Year. For now, Jack is going for …

  • Maloney: “Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, is an offensive dynamo … She leads all rookies in scoring, assists (also second in the league in that category) and 3-pointers made, is on pace to become the fourth player, and first rookie, to have a 15/5/5 season and recently became the first rookie ever to record a triple-double.”

from Jack in-depth look at Clark's attacking excellence is a must-read.
