Ex-Scientologist claims she was subjected to 'psychological, emotional abuse' during ongoing court case

Haney's lawyer, Graham E Berry, who wrote the May 30 letter, sent us a statement with his findings from the hearing, expressing some frustration with Scientology's attorney Willem Voorman reportedly told the court “that it had no power to do anything.” Instead, Foreman suggested the judge “simply set another status conference in eight months,” Berry said.

“The judge told me she did not have the power to end the arbitration,” he added, accusing the judge of being “dismissive.”

“I noted that Scientology's arbitration agreement does not contain a time limit and drew its attention to the Code of Civil Procedure section 1283.8 which provides that a party in that situation may request the court to set a period within which the arbitration award must be made,” Berry continued.

He pointed out that the Church of Scientology website states: “Any legal action in Scientology is expected to be concluded within a week of the meeting, sparing the parties involved the unnecessary stress of lengthy delays.”

Berry called Scientology's arbitration process “so insulting to Valerie, who are clearly being treated as oppressive persons, to be 'destroyed in any way possible'”, and claimed they used “mind control, coercive indoctrination and mental manipulation”.

“We must take this case to the California Supreme Court and perhaps to the United States Supreme Court for judicial review of the rights of former claimants who are members of a religious arbitration,” he said, adding added: “We also need another decision in California that a former member is no longer bound by a religious arbitration agreement alleging secular crimes and torts (even if committed against the former member while that former member was still in prison). group sat.)

“Furthermore, contracts between church and members should be excluded from containing mandatory religious arbitration of secular crimes and torts, or containing mandatory general releases.”
