Cruise ship on the conditions revealed after the ship failed its surprise health inspection

A Jimmy Buffett-themed cruise ship that promised customers a “paradise” was given a failing grade by health officials earlier this month.

Margaritaville in Sea Paradise fell short during a surprise health inspection from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on May 1. The survey was conducted by Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) officials.

The incident report, available on the CDC website, shows the ship received a failing score of 83. An 86 is required to pass.

One of the complaints cited was that the ship's whirlpools, designed for up to four people, had six swimmers.

The report also highlighted some sanitation concerns regarding food and beverages during the cruise.

A researcher also raised concerns about whether a crew member had washed his hands while handling food.

“The gloves worn by the crew member handling the ice making components of the ice machines were stored along with tools,” the report said. “It was unclear if the crew member washed his hands before putting on gloves. The bulkhead next to the ice machines had glove boxes for food handlers that could be used instead.”

Water bottles were also found “stored on dirty pallets”, the investigator noted, while food preparation areas were also found to be dirty and/or poorly lit. Another crew member was unable to “demonstrate competency” over lettuce cleaning chemicals.

“The crew member who washed and soaked the heads of lettuce in an antimicrobial solution for fruits and vegetables failed to demonstrate proficiency in verifying the concentration of the chemical used,” the CDC said. “The crew member could not properly use a test strip to verify the concentration of the solution and did not know what an acceptable test result would be.”

The CDC also noted that a freezer, several refrigerators and multiple deep fryers were all out of service.

A spokesperson for Margaritaville at Sea told Fox News Digital that “immediate corrective action” was taken following the inspection.

“Following internal policy, immediate corrective action was taken to address the issues identified during the inspection,” a statement said. “Many of these issues have already been resolved and we will work with USPH [United States Public Health] for a re-inspection as soon as possible.

“We expect this reinspection to exceed USPH standards.”
