Costco is raising its base membership fee for the first time since 2017, increasing the annual fee from $60 to $65, the retailer said. announced on Wednesday.

The 8.3% fee increase will take effect Sept. 1, the warehouse club said in a statement. The cost of a premium membership will increase from $120 to $130, the Issaquah, Wash.-based company said. Costco also said the maximum 2% annual incentive for its executive membership will increase from $1,000 to $1,250.

The price change affects about 52 million memberships. Costco has a track record of raising membership fees every five years or so, but company executives have said they were reluctant to do so as shoppers grapple with high inflation.

In 2022, warehouse club competitor Sam's Club raised its base annual fee to $50 and its premium to $110 for the first time in nine years.

While a Costco membership will cost more, the company's chief financial officer stressed in May that it has no plans to manipulate the popular Costco stock. $1.50 hot dog combo special, has existed since 1985.

Costco earlier this year stricter supervision of who uses the food court to ensure that only members can use the discount on Wiener and soft drinks.

The company operates 882 warehouses, 609 of which are in the United States and Puerto Rico.
