Anti-abortion groups support RNC platform despite restrained language

Anti-abortion groups are backing the official Republican Party platform for 2024, after previously warning former President Trump's campaign not to water down language on abortion.

The groups praised some specific language regarding the 14th Amendment that was approved Monday by a panel of the Republican National Committee (RNC) after months of lobbying against it.

The platform's language is reminiscent of Trump's “leave it to the states” approach. It does not call for giving embryos or fetuses constitutional rights, nor does it endorse a nationwide ban on abortion.

Leading abortion advocates have previously argued that weakening the platform would undo all the progress the movement has made in restricting access to the procedure and would divide the party it should unite.

The Republican Party platform has long condemned abortion and supported a nationwide ban. This year marked the first time the party has updated its platform since Roe v. Wade was overturned, and anti-abortion advocates were eager to make their mark.

In 2016, the platform supported “an amendment to the Constitution and Human Life Act to make clear that the protections of the Fourteenth Amendment extend to children before birth.”

The text contained language opposing any government funding for performing or promoting abortions or for funding organizations such as Planned Parenthood.

There were also calls for a national ban on abortion – with some exceptions – after about 20 weeks of pregnancy.

But in an apparent nod to the Trump campaign's desire not to be locked into endorsing specific limits, the new platform instead states that states are “free to pass laws” protecting 14th Amendment rights.

“After 51 years, that power has been given, thanks to us, to the States and to a voice of the people. We will oppose Late Term Abortion, while supporting mothers and policies that promote prenatal care, access to birth control and IVF (fertility treatments),” the platform said.

Anti-abortion groups say the text of the 14th Amendment is crucial, despite the state-centric approach.

“Importantly, the GOP today reaffirmed its commitment to protecting unborn life through the 14th Amendment. Under this amendment, it is Congress that enacts and enforces its provisions. The Republican Party remains strongly pro-life nationally,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.

Last week, Dannenfelser warned that moderating the 2016 language “would be a miscalculation that would damage party unity and destroy pro-life enthusiasm between now and the election.”

Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said the explicit support for protecting the 14th Amendment “is the most important contribution the GOP platform makes to life.”

Hawkins said that because the platform is so focused on the state, she wants Trump to urge voters to reject the vote on abortion rights in the state, “starting in Florida, where he's visiting tomorrow.”

John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life, noted in a statement that the Republican platform “has historically stood for the rights of the unborn and we are pleased to see that this election cycle will be no different.”

He said his group worked closely with the RNC in developing the platform language so it would reflect the post-Roe world.

“We remain passionate about the need to focus on winning hearts and minds on abortion in the states, while at the same time supporting women and families with federal policies that make having and raising children an easier equation in our current economic and inflationary environment,” Mize said.
