1-2 alcoholic drinks a day can shorten life by 2 months: study

(NewsNation) — A leading expert on alcohol and longevity has revealed that even moderate drinking can shorten life expectancy, challenging long-held beliefs about the health benefits of alcohol.

Dr. Tim Stockwell, a scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Researchtold the Daily Mail that consuming an average of two drinks a week over a lifetime can shorten a person's life by three to six days. One drink a day, seven a week, can shorten life expectancy by 2 1/2 months.

According to the U.S. government, heavy drinkers, who consume about 35 drinks per week, could lose about two years of their life. Stockwell's research.

These findings contradict the popular belief that moderate alcohol consumption, especially Red wineis good for your health. Stockwell, once an advocate of moderate drinking, changed his stance after discovering flaws in previous medical research.

A meta-analysis led by Stockwell, which analyzed 107 studies from the past four decades, found that no amount of alcohol improves health and that it may even increase the risk of death from all causes.

Alcohol has been shown to damage several organs, including the brain, heart, liver, and pancreas. It can raise blood pressure, contribute to heart disease, interfere with nutrient absorption, and suppress the immune system.

Stockwell and his colleagues have questioned the validity of studies suggesting the health benefits of alcohol, noting that many of them were funded by the alcohol industry. They argue that nondrinkers in studies appear less healthy because they have given up alcohol due to existing health problems.

Federal guidelines currently recommend that men drink no more than two drinks per day and women no more than one. However, recent research suggests that even these levels may be too high.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has convened a six-member advisory board to review the currentDrink recommendations.

Guidelines to vary from country to country, but the general trend is that people are drinking less.

The United Kingdom, France, Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia have recentlynew evidence assessedand lowered their recommendations for alcohol consumption. Ireland will require cancer warning labels on alcohol from 2026.
